Language and Identity – Today’s Generation of Grandchildren of the German-speaking Minorities in Central Eastern Europe

Project sponsor:
Goethe-Institut
Scientific Cooperation:
Prof. Dr. Claudia Maria Riehl

The internet-based project focuses on the young generation of grandchildren of German-speaking minorities and inquires about the meaningful and identity-establishing role of today’s German language. The use and application of the language are also considered. Young people in filmed interviews are asked to provide information about how they learned German and the role the German language plays in their everyday lives. Filmed sequences of their daily lives that document their use of the German language supplement the interviews.

The following link takes you to an online portal where the different interviews will gradually be made available to the public: http://www.goethe.de/prag/enkelgeneration

The scientific support and annotations are carried out by Prof. Dr. Claudia Maria Riehl (LMU München). A scientific evaluation of the project data in cooperation with Dr. Kreisslová (Charles University Prague) is planned.
